Disney wants to become the happiest place in the metaverse

November 11, 2021

Mickey Mouse is poised to venture into the metaverse.

Walt Disney (DIS.N) CEO Bob Chapek said the entertainment conglomerate is preparing to make the technological leap into a virtual reality world first imagined by science fiction writers.

It is a popular destination these days, ever since Facebook (FB.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the future of his company would be devoted to creating a robust, three-dimensional environment where users’ digital avatars would work, hang out and pursue their hobbies. read more

Other big companies, including game-makers Roblox Corp (RBLX.N) and Epic Games, and software giant Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), are working on their own metaverses. Disney’s plan was notably devoid of specifics, beyond dropping a buzzword that has animated Silicon Valley.

Chapek told investors Wednesday that entering this new digital frontier is consistent with Disney’s long history of technological innovation, dating back nearly a century to Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon to feature synchronized sound.

“Our efforts to date are merely a prologue to a time when we’ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling, without boundaries in our own Disney Metaverse,” Chapek said during Disney’s fourth-quarter earnings call. read more

In an interview with CNBC, Chapek said he envisions it as an extension of streaming video service Disney+ — through the “three-dimensional canvass” he envisions for new types of storytelling.

Disney’s former executive vice president of digital, Tilak Mandadi, wrote on LinkedIn in 2020 about creating a theme park metaverse, where “physical and digital world converge” through wearable devices, smartphones and digital access points.

Not all of Disney’s digital forays have had happy endings. Its online children’s social network, Club Penguin, shuttered in 2017, after 11 years. Its entry into social gaming, via its $563.2 million purchase of Playdom in 2010, resulted in a write-down. Its efforts to capitalize on the galloping popularity of short-form YouTube videos through a $500 million acquisition of Maker Studios in 2014, resulted in the operation being absorbed into other parts of the company.

Unvaccinated 20 times more likely to die from COVID-19: Texas study

November 11, 2021

A Texas government study found that unvaccinated people were 20 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than the fully vaccinated throughout most of September, providing further evidence backing the vaccines.

The research, published by the Texas Department of State Health Services on Monday, determined that 81.3 percent of COVID-19-related deaths between Sept. 4 and Oct. 1 occurred among unvaccinated people. In comparison, 5 percent of these fatalities occurred among the partially vaccinated, and 13.7 percent involved fully vaccinated patients.

In that time period, unvaccinated individuals in their 40s were 55 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than others who were the same age and fully vaccinated. Among those aged 75 and older, the unvaccinated were 12 times more likely to die.

Unvaccinated people were also 13 times more likely to contract COVID-19 than those who were fully vaccinated. More than 7 in 10 infected people were unvaccinated, compared to 19.3 percent who were partially vaccinated and 8.4 percent who were fully vaccinated.

The analysis of electronic lab reports, death certificates and the state immunization registry extended from Jan. 15 to Oct. 1 and concluded Texans were four to five times more likely to contract COVID-19 or die from the virus amid the spread of the highly transmissible delta variant than they were previously.

In that full-time period, unvaccinated people were 45 times more likely to get infected and 40 times more likely to suffer a COVID-19-related death. Approximately 85 percent of those who contracted or died from COVID-19 were unvaccinated.

The data out of Texas aligns with previous research that proves the vaccines’ effectiveness against the virus, including from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Data from the CDC released last month showed unvaccinated individuals were 11 times more likely to die from COVID-19 and six times more likely to test positive for the virus than the fully vaccinated.

With about 66.5 percent of its total state population having had at least one dose, Texas appears to be in line with the national rate of 67.5 percent.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) banned all COVID-19 vaccine mandates of any “entity in Texas” last month. The governor issued the executive order after the Biden administration announced a rule for businesses with at least 100 employees to require vaccinations or regular testing for their employees.

Movie Review: Saints and Soldiers

November 11, 2021

The full review is available at Cush Jar dot com.

WW2 movies can be hit or miss. The franchise of Saints and Soldiers starts with the original, and like most movie series, the original is the best. I do want to add, that I think there is some sort of ‘religious’ theme tied into all the movies in this series, but I barely noticed it so if that is something that stops you from watching, don’t let it with this first movie in this series. Ryan Little directed this movie, and it was from hearing stories from his religious professor at BYU.

The original is low budget like the rest but low budget doesn’t mean bad, and this one isn’t bad. This isn’t as good as “A Midnight Clear” a classic that should be a staple in every man’s watch list. (Let’s be real owning movies is dumb in 2021 or else I would have said collection)

This isn’t that, when THAT is Ethan Hawkes best work. Sinners and Saints is okay, no look it is better than okay. It’s three Cush Jars out of 5, and Hawkes (masterpiece) is only a 4.

But actually, Hawkes masterpiece is either Training Day or if your a sci-if fan it’s the Slept on Gattaca. Gattaca is great, but why is that one so slept on?

The movie looks at the the “mind of war.” It shows PTSD, and it shows it live during the battle.

Saints and Soldiers is a must watch. It isn’t Saving Private Ryan or “Midway” to my old heads but it’s a solid movie that deserves a watch of you like war movies.

Fetty Wap released on $500K bond following drug trafficking charge

November 6, 2021

Rapper Fetty Wap, who was arrested on a drug trafficking charge last week, is being released from custody on $500,000 bond.

The rapper, who is also known as Willie Junior Maxwell II, was indicted along with five others on a drug trafficking conspiracy charge, after federal prosecutors say the men allegedly transported, distributed drugs including heroin and fentanyl in Long Island, according to an indictment announced Friday.
He was arrested Oct. 28 at CitiField in New York City.

US District Judge Joanna Seybert approved his release with conditions including: GPS monitoring, random drug testing, that he surrender his passport and receive approval before traveling, according to John Marzulli, a spokesman with the US

Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
The indictment, which was filed on Sept. 29 and unsealed last week, charged Maxwell with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess controlled substances.

The other defendants were also charged with an additional count of use of firearms in connection with a drug trafficking crime.
In a press release, authorities allege a pipeline of drugs ran from the West Coast to the East Coast, “contributing to the addiction and overdose epidemic we have seen time and time again tear people’s lives apart.”
